The NHS’s emergency departments are under pressure as complaints about the waiting times, a key component of measured patient satisfaction, continue to mount. To increase patient satisfaction, a potential route is to attempt to reduce perceived wait time. There is a popular psychological idea that unknown waits are longer than known. By providing accurate, personalized wait times it is possible to ease anxieties, leading to a lesser perceived wait time. Research has shown that it is possible to achieve a high degree of accuracy calculating personalised wait times using machine learning. No available patient management system displays personalised waiting times to patients. This project delivers a prototype of what an application for patients which delivers real time updates on their wait time might look like. This prototype also includes a simple digital triage process to further relieve staff. The features included in the prototype aim to ease patient anxiety and increase efficiency for staff.
